With pre-sale figures for today’s game at Walsall close to 900 another huge United following is guaranteed as the final run-in well and truly kicks in.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, manager Paul Simpson said: “It’s brilliant and we’re going to need them. We need everybody to drag us over the line and to get us through to where we need to go.
“There’s still going to be loads of twists and turns, and if you look at Saturday you see that Stevenage had a late goal disallowed. Teams have drawn, and all of those sorts of things, and as I’ve said many times, we just need to make sure we do our bit right.
“We got done big style in the cup at Walsall and I don’t want that to happen again. There’s always a bit of an edge to it, so we’ve got to go out there and find some energy.
“If the supporters can give us that energy with what they do, that’ll be brilliant, but hopefully the players understand what’s needed, what we want from them, and what they want to give to each other.
“We’re going to have to go and hurt for each other and try to make sure we get a proper performance.”
“And let’s be honest, Walsall are a good side,” he added. “I don’t actually understand how they’re doing what they’re doing. I think they’ve got a really strong squad of players.
“They’ve probably invested more in their players in the summer certainly than we have and a lot of clubs have, they’ve had a right go this season so I don’t understand what the problems are.
“I don’t really care, it’s more about how we’re going to go about it, and we’ve just got to be really on the front foot. I don’t know what the players think about earlier in the season because I’ve never really discussed it, but I’m still smarting from the way we lost the game there in the cup.
“I want to make sure that we finish this game better than we did that time. We have to start the game as well as we did on Friday and make sure we see it off with a really professional job.
“What I do hope is that the way the game ended down there has put some fire in the bellies of the players that makes them want to go out and play with a good discipline and desire to get three points, because that’s all that matters again.”
It’s a message that has been clear for months now – let’s do our jobs.
“That’s all we can do,” he insisted. “I don’t want to know during the game about anybody else because we have to do our jobs. I still do think that if we do ours properly then we’ll be ok.
“We certainly need more wins, we’ve got six games left, and it’s an 18-game mini-league that we now face. We have to keep driving each other on, as we did against Tranmere.
“It’s a great position that we’re in and you have to really embrace it all, but also make sure you perform. That’s what we’ll try to do.”
