PREVIEW: Mansfield

Four wins and three defeats have made it a steady if sometimes frustrating start to the season, but three consecutive home victories leading into Tuesday night's encounter has propelled the Stags back into the play-off places.

A team that scores goals - 12 in the league alone suggests they can be potent - they have a healthy spread of contributions to thank with players from all areas of the pitch finding the back of the net.

Home is definitely where the heart is but the five-goal haul against Gillingham came at a price when it was confirmed that striker Rhys Oates will be out of action for an indefinite spell because of a chest injury.

The May play-off disappointment at the hands of Port Vale isn't something they want to see repeated, and they remain one of the division's fancied outfits.

Experienced midfielder Ollie Clarke registered two goals in two outings towards the end of August and he's one who will make things and break things up if he's allowed the freedom of the middle of the pitch.

He has an ability to read the game, and pick a pass, so he's our one to monitor on Tuesday night.

Easter Monday 2022 brought a solitary goal from Omari Patrick that was enough to keep the points in Cumbria.

It was a close affair in Mansfield in November 2021, decided by a sixth minute goal from Stephen McLaughlin.

Carlisle were at Field Mill in March 2021 and it was Ozzy Zanzala who gave the Blues a lead on 66 minutes. Any thoughts of a win were wiped away when Stephen McLaughlin equalised with 10 minutes left to play.

These two sides came together pre-Christmas in 2020 with the Stags heading north to Brunton Park. A neat pass from Jack Armer was complemented by a stunning finish from Omari Patrick, and that goal proved to be the difference between the sides on the day.

A visit to Mansfield was on the cards just ahead of the Covid lockdown in February 2020. It turned into an exciting encounter as Nicky Maynard put the home side two goals to the good. Elliot Watt and Josh Kayode struck back late in the day to earn the Blues a hard-earned draw.

These teams met at the start of the 2019/20 season when the Stags came north to Brunton Park. It was a game where United struggled to get going and they were undone early in the game by a deep cross to the back post. Danny Rose arrived late to smash it into the net. The advantage was doubled on the stroke of half time, and that's how it stayed as the visitors went away with a 2-0 victory.

Our referee for this game is Mr Sam Allison. He has taken charge of three games so far this season showing eight yellow cards and one red.

He was in charge of that memorable Carlisle game at Oldham in March 2022. Hallam Hope gave the hosts the lead on the stroke of half-time but Omari Patrick struck back after the break. Morgan Feeney took the headlines with a dramatic winner deep into time added on. Feeney was booked, along with Dynel Simeu and Jon Mellish.

We saw him at Leyton Orient for our 3-2 away win in May 2021. Jon Mellish, Lewis Alessandra and George Tanner bagged our goals, and Mellish joined Ethan Walker in the book with a yellow card.

He first officiated a game involving United in March 2021 when we made the short trip to The Globe Arena to face Morecambe. The hosts took a three-goal lead before Aaron Hayden bagged a late consolation, and Lewis Alessandra was the only Carlisle name taken on the day.
