United play Fleetwood away in the first of this season’s Central League Cup group games this afternoon, with United boss Paul Simpson looking to get minutes into legs for his players.
“After this week we’ve got Tuesday night games for the next few weeks, so it’s a case of just freshening the players up again,” he said. “The game against Fleetwood will give us a chance to get everybody up to speed.
“A lot of them had minutes last Tuesday and this is another opportunity. Then games will come thick and fast over the next few weeks that we need everybody to be right and available.
“That’s why this game is good for match fitness, which is really important. We can’t replicate that in training and that’s why we want to see them go about it properly and do the work properly.
“It’s in-game decisions you need and that’s what you get from that. I’m quite sure it will be a really good test.”
