PREVIEW: Stockport

The busy run of Saturday-Tuesday fixtures continue for the Blues in Stockport on Tuesday night.

These teams last met in a competitive fixture in January 2010, with the Hatters battling hard to maintain their League One status at that time.

They've been through one heck of a journey since then, with last season's return to the Football League the end product of a fantastic season.

A tough August saw them pick up just four points, and September brought another run of sticky results. Just one defeat in the last four outings suggests that they're ready to kick on, with a particularly decent win at Salford on Saturday to lift the mood further.

That came courtesy of goals from Will Collar and Paddy Madden - a good way to round off a first ever league meeting between the teams.

There was unexpected transfer activity this month when former Tranmere left-back Calum MacDonald joined on a short-term deal until January. He was a free agent and had spent a period on trial.

There's quality everywhere you look, on the bench and amongst the starters, with the likes of Callum Camps, Ollie Crankshaw, Antoni Sarcevic and Myles Hippolyte on the roll, but we can't look further than Paddy Madden.

He spent two years with us in his younger days, and has gone on to enjoy a fantastic career. He has a huge 154 league goals to his name, with one in each of his last four appearances.

A clear eye for goal, he'll have to be watched closely.

The second-leg of the Auto Windscreens semi-final in March 1997 brought a 0-0 draw at Edgeley Park and progress to Wembley for the Deckhair Army (Stobart version).

The first-leg of the Auto Windscreens semi-final in March 1997 was a charged affair, with both sides determined to get a foothold in the tie. Owen Archdeacon opened the scoring with a lovely finish just before the hour, and the same player netted from the spot in time added on after Sumo had been chopped to the floor.

Referee - Benjamin Speedie
Assistant Referee 1 - Ian Smedley
Assistant Referee 2 - Mark Cunliffe
Fourth Official - Aaron Jackson
Observer - Mark Haywood

Our referee for this fixture is Mr Ben Speedie. He has taken charge of 12 games so far this season showing 50 yellow cards and three reds.

We saw him here in Carlisle in October 2021 for what was a slog of a 0-0 draw. Obviously there were no goals, and there were also no names taken.

He was at Brunton Park for our 3-1 Football League Trophy defeat to Fleetwood at the beginning of September 2020. It was an eventful night for Gime Toure, who both scored and was sent off, but the group game points went to the Cod Army thanks to goals from Callum Camps and Harvey Saunders (2). Joe Riley also went into the book.

We have received the following information from Stockport:

Due to disorder outside the ground, at some recent games and also seen across the UK at multiple fixtures, we have no choice but to have to look to hold back your fans after the game.

Where the away fans enter/exit is directly into the main arterial route into our stadium for home fans and this creates a “flash point” and we need to look to reduce this as much as possible for the safety of both sets of supporters and especially the family element which we both will share.

The police will be on hand to help escort your fans back to the coaches and we have a new designated area for coaches to park, and wait, which is protected on all sides by a solid perimeter fence and the compound will also be stewarded.

Coaches are required to not run their engines within the compound (once parked up), due to the immediate local residents, and any coaches which refuse to turn off their engines will be requested to leave and find alternative parking.

Thank you in advance for your support with these processes.
