The winter transfer window is now officially open and manager Keith Millen confirmed once again that he’s looking to add to the squad, particularly with a very busy run of rearranged games to contend with over the course of the next six to eight weeks.
But with another game-winning performance under the belt from the current group, he confirmed that it’s providing a solid platform upon which the new additions can be introduced.
“They’ve showed me that they understand what I’m asking them to do, and that they have the desire and work rate they need for each other,” he said. “It doesn’t change the fact that we need to bring in reinforcements and we definitely need to bring in more quality.
“I want players who will give us more and help us. Look at the bench from Saturday - Joe Riley is just back from six weeks out, and he wasn’t really fully physically fit, even though he’s medically ready.
“We had young Jack Ellis, who has just come into the squad, and Brad Young is also only 18. Taylor Charters is still a young lad, but that’s all we had.
“We’ve got a lot of games in the next two months so we need to have people in to help us. There will be a need to rotate the squad a little bit, and we’re bound to pick up the odd injury, so we’re active in the market.”
“I’m hoping maybe a couple of things will happen next week, that would be nice, so we’re working really hard to try to get a couple as soon as we can,” he confirmed.
“We’ve been talking and looking, and we’re further down the line with a few. Until it’s all done you never get your hopes up, but we know the targets and we are quite a long way down the line.
“The fact is we need more players to come in and help the group with what they’re doing. The competition for places, the rotation of squad, is going to be massive over the next two months.”
“By the time we play Bradford we should have Tristan and Manny back,” he told us. They should be back in training on Monday, but we haven’t seen them for over a week.
“As far as Tuesday is concerned, some of the players that we’re looking at have played in the Papa John’s so wouldn’t be available anyway.
“I’m hoping we’ve got maybe a slightly stronger squad for Tuesday and by Bradford we might have a couple of faces that need to come into the club and team and fight for their place.
“You need competition for places. If you’re going to go anywhere as a club and team you’ve got to have competition for places. With a spell of midweek games coming there’s no way you can continue doing what we’ve done on Saturday every few days on repeat.
“It’s impossible. The club knows that from last year. Hopefully we’ll learn the lessons and get some more competition for places into the building.”
