PREVIEW: Northampton

Following the weekend postponement the clubs moved quickly to sort out a new date, and off to Northampton it is just four days after the original game was due to be played.

Northampton are on a run of seven league games without defeat, but it has to be pointed out that four of those have ended as draws.

One of the fancied teams, following some decent summer activity, they haven't disappointed with, like ourselves, just the three league reverses to their name so far.

They're the only team in the division to have scored more in the league than we have - they have 34 to our 31 - and they've kept things tight to share the same figure in the goals conceded column, averaging just one against in each of their league fixtures.

The club rewarded 17-year-old striker Josh Tomlinson for becoming the youngest goalscorer in their history with a long-term professional contract recently.

Tomlinson had already entered the history books when he became the club's youngest-ever player to feature for the first-team when he made his debut, aged only 15, in the Papa Johns Trophy game against Brighton U21s last season.

And he was just 16 years and 321 days old when he scored against Arsenal in the same competition in October.

Sam Hoskins is having a fantastic season with 13 goals in 16 appearances so far. The 29-year-old has 57 in 270 league appearances for the Cobblers as he heads into his eighth campiagn with the club.

His goals this time round include four braces and seven in five outings at the start of the season.

Fast and strong, and clearly feeling confident, he'll need to be dealt with.

It was a dramatic victory for the Blues at Brunton Park in March 2022 with three late goals to up the blood pressure. Tobi Sho-Silva netted with 15 minutes left to go, but Paul Lewis quickly levelled things up. It was left to Jordan Gibson to claim the points from the spot deep into time added on.

The Cobblers swept United aside in October 2021 with a convincing 3-0 home win. Paul Lewis netted a hat-trick on the day.

Northampton took the points away from Brunton Park in October 2019 with second half goals from Scott Pollock and Sam Hoskins.

The teams met in January 2019 when the Cobblers claimed a 3-0 home victory. A certain fella called Jack Bridge notched a brace, with Junior Morias also on target for the hosts.

We went up against Northampton for the first time last season in August when the teams played out a 2-2 draw. Jamie Devitt gave the Blues the lead with a stunning strike on the half hour, but Kevin van Veen pulled things level just before the break. Matt Crooks put the visitors ahead midway through the second half, but the lead lasted just 60 seconds as Hallam Hope struck back in the very next attack.

Image removed. Our referee for this fixture is Mr James Oldham (replacement for Marc Edwards).

James has taken charge of 16 games so far this season showing 55 yellow cards and six reds.

He was with us for our first away game of the 22/23 season when a goal from Kris Dennis earned us a draw. Fin Back and Ben Barclay received yellow cards.

We saw him at Spotland in March 2022 when goals for Liam Kelly and Conor Grant sealed the win for the home team. Danny Devine, Brennan Dickenson and Dynel Simeu all went in the book.

He was the man in the middle for our Carabao Cup meeting with Sheffield United at Brammall Lane in August 2021. A solitary goal in the first half from Rhian Brewster was enough to win the tie for the hosts, and Jack Armer's was the only name taken on the night.

We saw James at Walsall in January 2021 where goals from Omari Patrick and Josh Kayode secured a 2-0 away win, with the game being completed just in the nick of time as snow started to fall. Aaron Hayden, Jack Armer and Taylor Charters were booked for the Blues.

Mr Oldham was in charge of our home game against Walsall in January 2020. Byron Webster, Stefan Scougall and Mike Jones had their names taken with no goals bagged.

He was at Brunton Park for his first ever Football League game as the man in the middle for our 2019/20 season opener against Crawley Town. Harry McKirdy and Stefan Scougall scored in the first half, either side of a net bulger from Beryly Lubula, and that was it for the goals as United claimed a 2-1 win. Byron Wesbter went in the book for the home side and Lewis Young was sent off late in the day for the Red Devils.

We saw Mr Oldham again for our first-round Emirates FA Cup meeting with Dulwich Hamlet in November 2019. Olufela Olomola, Harry McKirdy (2) and Mike Jones bagged for the Blues, and Byron Webster and Ryan Loft had their names taken as Carlisle recorded a 4-1 victory.

Mr Oldham ended his time as an official with the National League at Wembley with the play-off final between Salford City and AFC Fylde in May 2019.
