A group of United’s admin staff will be taking on the Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland ‘Step Up to the Plate’ walking challenge on Saturday 11 September as they look to enjoy some brisk exercise and breath-taking scenery - at the same time as taking in some local eateries as they enjoy samples of Cumbrian delicacies along the way.

And, of course, the event will raise vital funds to help Hospice at Home make a real difference in the community, providing end-of-life care to patients who wish to remain at home, with their loved ones around them.
The first event in the ‘Step Up to the Plate’ walk series took place in 2019 and was a great success. ‘The Second Course’ of this walking event was originally planned for July 2020, but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now it’s back, and the event is open to adults, children ... and dogs are welcome too!
Two routes are available on the day:
1 – Greenhead to Lanercost, 8.5 miles.
2 – Greenhead to Carlisle, 21 miles.
Both difficulty levels are moderate.
Registration fee is £30 for adults, £10 for juniors (11 to 17) and under-11s can join the walk for free.
The fundraising aim is £75 for adults.
Finance Director Suzanne Kidd said: “As soon as we found out about this we knew it was something we wanted to do.
“It’s been such a difficult year for so many organisations who do good and vital work within our communities. This is a great way for us to help at the same time as getting out and about as things return to some kind of normal for all of us.
“We’ve worked with Hospice at Home before and these are the kinds of community links we want to maintain and nurture.
“A group of eight of us will be doing the Greenhead to Carlisle walk and we’re hoping to see a lot of people out there enjoying it with us on the day.”
