Carlisle United are delighted to announce that club captain Callum Guy has signed a new deal which keeps him at Brunton Park until at least the summer of 2023 (with a further 12-month option).
Guy, 24, first penned an 18-month deal with the Blues during the January 2020 transfer window. A triggered clause secured his services for a further 12-months at the end of the 20/21 season.
He made 47 appearances during his first full season at Brunton Park and won various end of season player of the year awards as he finished the season top of the League Two assist charts.
Manager Chris Beech said: “It’s hard not to be pleased when your club’s player of the year and team captain commits his long-term future to the football club.
“I’m aware there was wide speculation about Callum’s future in the summer - would ‘this club’ or ‘that club’ come in with a bid for him - but this shows exactly where he wants to be.
“I’ve said it before, Callum is not only a very good footballer but he’s an honest, committed and hard-working lad. He wants to be successful in the game and do it with us.”
“He’s proud to represent this football club as our captain and takes on that responsibility with great pride,” he continued. “Interestingly enough, not long after we brought him here, and the season got curtailed, he asked if he could have his shirt number (8) and jokingly said ‘you can put the armband on my peg too, when you’re ready.’
“He went on to be our multiple player of the season and, after taking a handful of games to get into rhythm, began to show everyone his quality, assists and interceptions. He’s been fantastic and how he didn’t make the league’s team of year is beyond me.”
“Credit also to David [Holdsworth] and the football club,” he commented. “He’s pushed to make this happen, recognises the importance of Callum in our group as a player and captain, and I also think it’s good for our supporters and the other lads see someone like Callum want to stay and be proud to represent us and those core Cumbrian values.”
A box-to-box midfielder, Guy started his career with Derby County where he quickly became a regular in the club’s under-23 side.
He had loan spells with Port Vale and Bradford whilst with the Rams, where he gained vital league experience, then spent the first half of the 2018/19 campaign at Bloomfield Road, where he made 21 appearances.
His performances secured him a permanent move and he made just under 50 appearances for the Tangerines, including 22 through the first half of the 2019/20 season.
