United boss Chris Beech confirmed that recruitment work is ongoing as he looked ahead to a first full week of pre-season training here at Brunton Park.
Talking about the current squad numbers, he said: “You can have too many, and you can not have enough.
“You also need a little bit of luck to make sure that whatever you’ve done falls in right. We’ve got plenty of time in pre-season, we might see a couple of trialists along the way, and we’re competitive and active in the market.
“That’s always the case, even if we’ve got full numbers, because you constantly have to keep looking. You never know what will change, and often when it does change, it comes completely out of the blue. You have to make sure you’re ready for that.”
“David [Holdsworth] is constantly working, talking and chatting to agents to get their views, and at the moment I’m getting thousands of calls as well,” he continued. “I’m not too sure where they accessed my number from mind you, but it is very busy.
“But at the same time we’ve got to concentrate on the lads we’ve already got and make what we are stronger. That’s why pre-season and a block of training is important.
“It’s great that Lewi Bell, Josh Dixon and Taylor Charters are looking fit and strong. I’m really pleased about that because I want to see Cumbrian spirit in our team.
“I want us to represent it with our values that we have, and I want the new players we get to make difference to us. It’s a bit of a balancing act but we’re definitely working hard to find improvements.
“As I’ve said, we don’t start the season tomorrow, but if we did we’ve got a team that could represent us very well. What we need to do is look at how we try to make it better.
“We all know without going too much into detail that it’s difficult because we’ve got to try to make something that was very good, better.
“It’s hard when it’s the same, so you have to try to find difference within that and try to utilise your budget in the best possible way you can. That’s what we try to do.”
