Having spoken already this week about the ongoing recruitment work, we asked manager Chris Beech if the summer weeks had seen any of the more frustrating situations which can arise, when it appears that a deal is done only for it to then fall away.
“I suppose it has been a little bit with the lads we tried to retain,” he said. “And I mentioned last week that we’d come close with a keeper.
“Once those decisions are made you then look to what you need to do. There’s a lot of clubs spending a heck of a lot of money and sometimes from my point of view there’s nothing you can do about that.
“What we have to do is work intelligently and diligently in the middle grounds in making sure we get what will represent the values of us trying to get our three points.”
“We were two wins and a draw short of the play-offs and probably three or four wins away from automatic,” he continued. “We were very competitive at home, we were good at times away.
“I think we beat Crawley at their place when they hadn’t been beaten there for a year, so we did things like that, which was very good. But we need to do just a little bit more and show a little bit more technicality in what we do. As ever it’s all about winning.
“It doesn’t matter where we win, home or away, it’s the accumulation of points that matters. You try to win every game, of course you do, but we need to make sure that if we’re going to do anything special we look to repeat and progress the home situation, and the easiest thing to point your finger at is the away form and our need to improve that record.
“There are 92 managers who will probably be saying a similar thing, so in theory great, but in reality we’ve got to make it happen.”
