FRIENDLY: Chorley away

A busy July period continued with a trip to Lancashire to face Chorley on Tuesday night, and the heatwave continued with Victory Park bathed in late afternoon sunshine.

United had keeper Lukas Jensen between the sticks, fresh in on-loan from Burnley for the season, with Aaron Hayden handed skipper duties for the evening.

The Magpies started well and Thomlinson let fly from distance when the ball came his way. Jensen showed good hands to gather it in.

A huge pass from Urwin found Hall on the run and his first touch took him into the box. His angled grasscutter had to be beaten away by Jensen.

Carlisle responded with a surge down the right and Whelan overlapped into space. He popped it into the area and Armer arrived late to meet it at the back stick. His connection was firm but it bobbled agonisingly just past the upright.

Forward Zach Clough moved off the shoulder of his marker in the next attacking wave and his control on his toe was sublime. It was a tight angle and his attempted lob was eventually clutched by Urwin.

A fizzed volley from Hall for the Magpies whisked past the target, and that preceded an excellent spell for the away side.

Abrahams initially had a goal chalked off for offside but he soon put that right when he got onto the end of a fine delivery from Dickenson. He guided it past the keeper with his instep, from 17-yards out, into the bottom corner.

The lead was doubled four minutes later when Dickenson worked hard to keep possession. He fed it to Alessandra, and a precise pass carved its way through the back line. Zach Clough got the slightest of touches to divert it into the waiting net.

Lewis Alessandra saw a lot the ball and he rode a tackle before trying his luck from 20-yards. Urwin scampered backwards to tip it over before it could cross the line.

Chorley weren't about to lie down and a deep corner was headed goalwards by Leather. Another flick took the sting out of it and Jensen reacted smartly to bring it into his chest.

The Cumbrians stayed patient in midfield but Clough wasn't too far away when a cross from Whelan was blocked. It sat up nicely but his drilled volley edged just wide.

The last chance of the half went the way of the Magpies when Hall skipped into space inside the area. A heavy first touch narrowed the angle, and he watched in despair as his toe poke ran harmlessly along the face of goal.

A lively start to the second half saw Hayden force a fine save out of Urwin when he crunched a crisp volley through bodies.

Chorley broke, and Shenton suddenly had space in the area. A thunderbolt appeared to be going in until Jensen threw himself full length to touch it away.

Another shot from range was comfortable for Jensen before United turned on the style with some neat passing. Alessandra used Armer to create space before lofting a reverse pass to Dickenson. His cross had venom but, following a series of ricochets, it was eventually swiped clear.

Carlisle came again just past the hour when Clough sliced the defence open with a lovely pass. Abrahams had just the keeper to beat but the big man spread himself to make a great block.

Guy then floated a free kick to the back stick as the pressure stayed on. McDonald met it with a thundering downward header but the keeper somehow arched his body to make the save on the line.

United made eight changes with just over 15 minutes left to play, with Chorley having made six, and Toure and Mampala tried to make gaps as they linked well together. The ball spun free for Dixon to strike but he dragged it wide.

Alessandra fashioned an opening which bounced back off the base of the post late in the day, and Toure had a low attempt gobbled up by the keeper as the game flowed in the closing stages.

But that was it for the scoring on what had been another enjoyable away day.
