United’s threat from attacking set pieces has become a feature of their game over recent weeks, with Aaron Hayden the latest beneficiary as he bagged his third goal for the club from an Elliot Watt corner against Morecambe at the weekend.
But boss Chris Beech spoke after the game about the need for more goals from midfield as he looks to turn draws into victories over the final 12 weeks of the campaign.
“At the moment we’re not being reliant on one player to get goals, which is good,” he said. “But we have to make sure we find a way of playing which allows for scoring opportunities.
“For example, Wildig’s goal is excellent for Morecambe. I want my midfield players scoring goals, I want them all on eight and 10 for the season because that’s another 30 goals for the team.
“I want set plays to have a factor in goals over a season, which they are now, and I was told they weren’t before, in terms of having an effect. If you can score 20 set play goals, there’s your 20-goal striker, and you’re not paying for it.
“We’ve got to make sure that we’re really utilising every aspect that we can, and then hopefully we will get a 20-goal striker as well. Omari patrick has just walked into the room, he’s got 19 goals to go in 12 games to reach that …”
“What we do have at the moment is a bit of resilience,” he continued. “Credit the lads for that, but I wouldn’t accept it if it wasn’t like that.
“But I’m pleased with how everybody’s supporting each other trying to achieve results. We just have to keep on that track and keep believing it will fall in. We’re so close to being on a massive winning run, but so far away at the same time.
“It’s like anything, when you get so close to something, it’s at that point you have to make that correct contact decision and look for the right outcome. It will fall in for the lads and for the club, and our supporters. We’ve just got to keep working hard."
