MANAGER: I want us to show integrity with everything

Having watched Hebburn Town striker Cedwyn Scott grab two goals in United’s pre-Christmas reserve game against Rochdale manager Chris Beech confirmed that he’s hoping to take another look at the 22-year-old as early as possible in the new year.

“Cedwyn’s a great lad, a very humble person,” he said. “He lives very near to us. I’ve had a good conversation with him on Christmas Eve so he knows where we’re at.

“I want to try and look at him a bit further in the early parts of January when we have another game, I have to make sure it’s right for him and me.

“He went to Scotland and it wasn’t right for him, it’s a waste of everybody’s time, so we have to make sure he’ll make a difference to us before we get to that point.”

Meanwhile he also had praise for captain Nick Anderton, who handled a difficult situation on Christmas Day in a very professional manner.

“Nick was really unfortunate in that he was with someone on Christmas Day who found out later that night that they had tested positive for Covid,” he said. “We could have ignored that, he could have ignored it, but that would have been putting everybody at danger and at risk, and we’re not about that.

“I’m thankful that Nick is an honest fella and that he told us. He’s ended up having his Christmas dinner with somebody and they’ve found out later in the day that they’ve got a positive test result.

“It’s a shame they’re together at that point but Nick can’t control that. As soon as he found out he’s told us, and we’ve had to do the right things for the right reasons from that point on.

“Isolating and staying away was the right thing to do and I want us all to be honest in everything we do. I want us to show integrity with everything.

“We’re not going to get everything right, and we have comments ourselves on what goes wrong in the 90 minutes of the game, but whatever happens I want it to be for the right reasons.

“I’m really proud of how we go about what we do. It’s what we have to do, following policies and procedures, and it’s what we will always do as far as I’m concerned.”
