It was back to league action for the under-18 side on Saturday morning as they hosted Preston North End at Creighton.
And the young Blues had only themselves to blame as they missed two one-on-ones, a penalty and numerous chances as they fell to a 3-1 home defeat to the travelling whites.
Youth boss Eric Kinder said: "That was very frustrating. We created some good openings but, yet again, we didn't finish them off and we were made to pay.
"Kyle Soper got our goal but we should have added to it. Some of the lads will be in Cumberland Cup action on Tuesday night, and then it's off to Mansfield on Friday night for our final Youth Alliance Cup group game.
"There were plenty of good things to take into next week from this game but we know we have to better in the final third."
