INTERVIEW: We respect them but we want to impose our game

Caretaker boss Gavin Skelton took a look ahead to tomorrow’s home game against Cambridge United at his pre-match press conference.

“We’re aware of the shape Cambridge have played in their last few games and the different variations they have,” he said. “They’ve got some good players and we’re aware of how they’ll play, so we’ll be doing our best to stop that.

“On the other side of that, we need to counter what they do, make sure we’re on the front foot and take the game to them.”

“They’ve got players with good legs and good ability in the middle of the park,” he continued. “They generally play a back three so they’re strong in that area, and they’ve got little and large up front, so they’ve got the variation to be able to play short or long.

“It’s hard to gauge how they’ll approach it because they’ve got a lot of different options, but we’ll be concentrating on imposing ourselves on the game and getting our positive players high up the pitch so we can cause them problems.

“I know it’s easy to say that, but that’s what we’ll be going into the game to try and do. We respect Cambridge and we know what they can do, but we’ll be going into it in a positive frame of mind and we’re all looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd.”

“The fans were excellent at Port Vale last week,” he continued. “They clapped us off at the end and sang all the way through, and we’d obviously love that to be replicated on Saturday, because it helps everyone.

“We’re also aware we have to give them something to cling onto so they can get behind us. If the fans can come to the stadium in a positive mindset and get behind us for the 90 minutes, it is a massive help for us, there’s no two ways about it.

“If they want to give us grief at the end we’ll take that on the chin, that doesn’t change from club to club, but this is a great place to play when the fans are behind you.”

“We know where we are and we know we need results, but wherever you are in the league you always want to win games, especially at home,” he told us. “We want to go and get a result for the fans and to lift us up the league table.

“We’ve obviously put a game plan together for Saturday, we want to be positive again and try and get on the front-foot so we get the crowd behind us. Hopefully that will lead to a good atmosphere in the stadium and a positive result.”
