Club legend Jimmy Glass returns to Carlisle on Tuesday 26 March to celebrate the 20th anniversary of possibly the most important goal in the history of Carlisle United.
8 May 1999 is one of those dates where every Carlisle United fan can remember where they were.
The goal from on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass, later voted one of the greatest ever sporting moments, is iconic. ‘Doing a Jimmy Glass’ is regularly cited by commentators whenever a goalkeeper goes up for a corner.
As part of a Sky Sports documentary, Jimmy returns to Brunton Park to be filmed around the ground, whilst the memories of fans will also be recorded.
Speaking about the return of Jimmy, CUSG chair Simon Clarkson said: “We are delighted to be able to help Sky Sports with this documentary.
“The opportunity of having Jimmy in Carlisle was too big to miss. Despite being relatively short notice we felt that we could still put together an event.
“The venue will be Foxy’s Restaurant and the evening will be hosted by Mike Zeller from Radio Cumbria. It will be similar in format to the Legends evenings we’ve run before.
“Other guests will also include Carlisle players from the game. It’s sure to be a great night and is only £5 a ticket.”
Who can forget the iconic commentary from Derek Lacey of Radio Cumbria:
So ... deep, deep, deep, I make it sixty seconds. Jimmy Glass knocks it long. It comes now to Bagshaw. Bagshaw back to Anthony. Up to Stevens ... and the ball goes out now for a corner to Carlisle United – will they have time to take it?
Referee looks at his watch ... and here comes Jimmy Glass! Carlisle United goalkeeper Jimmy Glass is coming up for the kick – everyone is going up ... there isn't one player in the Carlisle half! Well, well ... and the corner kick comes in ... and ... the goalkeeper's punch ... oh ... Jimmy Glass! Jimmy Glass! Jimmy Glass, the goalkeeper, has scored a goal for Carlisle United!
There's a pitch invasion! There is a pitch invasion! The referee has been swamped – they're bouncing on the crossbar!
