INTERVIEW: We're well aware of what we need to do

Director of football David Holdsworth gave us an update on the ongoing January transfer window activity as he works closely with new manager Steven Pressley on bringing new faces into the club.

“Steven [Pressley] has just come through the door and there have been lots of decisions to be made," he explained. "We don’t want to make rash decisions, but trying to get somebody in the door immediately was our plan, particularly with Richie Bennett having gone to Morecambe.

“We’ve identified a few players that Steven has discussed with Tommy [Wright] and Paul [Murray] who fit into our plan going forward. We tried to get one of those through the door today, but unfortunately we missed the 12pm deadline by a few minutes, because of agents having to do their work.

"We were all ready at our end, and although it didn’t come to fruition today, we do hope to have the player signed next week."

“It has been frustrating today with the player we missed out on," he admitted. "I’d done everything I could and it was out of my hands, there was nothing else we could have done at the club.

"We ended up in the lap of the gods with agents and another club involved, and sadly we haven’t been able to get it over the line.

“Steven has already identified a couple of targets and going forward it’s imperative we make sure we’ve got the right balance in our structure on the pitch. We’re hoping the players will bring goals to us, particularly with us not having Jerry [Yates] and Ashley [Nadesan] available to us at this moment in time."

“Steven and I have been talking about players since our first meeting, and we’re well aware of what we need to do," he said. "The manager has been brought in to keep us in those top seven positions and we want to support him as much as possible.

"We’ve made some very successful outgoings, and now we need to concentrate on incomings. We know our squad is insufficient right now in terms of numbers and experience.

"We’ve brought in a couple of young players, and we’re obviously aware of the loan market, but I am looking at players who are out of contract, or maybe players who are in contract but we ask them to get out of their contract to make the move here.

"That way, it doesn’t use up the five loan spaces available in our squad. Obviosuly we're still working behind the parent clubs on Nadesan, Sowerby and Yates.

"All we can do is keep asking the question so that we make sure the door doesn't close should we find that they are in a position to come back here to play for us.”
