We spoke to midfielder Kelvin Etuhu this week to get his thoughts on the current run of form and the news that he has triggered a contract extension which keeps him at Brunton Park until the end of next s.
Speaking first about the weekend defeat, he told us: “The Northampton game was difficult for the boys. We’d been on a really good run, so to end it like that was disappointing.
“We’re still in a positive frame of mind, we know the run we went on before that was a good run which came from a lot of hard work behind the scenes. To win six games in a row, especially with the fixtures they were, was very impressive.
“I’ve been part of unbeaten runs before but not consecutive wins like that. A run like that really lifts the dressing room, and we’ve got a good dressing room anyway. When times are hard the lads all get around each other and keep each other going, so the atmosphere at the moment is really good.
“It’s about how we react now, but we’ve done it before. We’ve been on decent runs then lost a game, but we always seem to bounce back with a win. We’ll just keep working hard and I’m sure the next win will come quickly."
“We’ll obviously be looking to get that in front of our fans on Saturday," he told us. "The main thing is to put a good performance in.
"Every team in this league gives you a different test so we’ll be prepared and go out looking for the three points."
Having already started 24 league games this season, the combative midfielder confirmed that he's triggered a year extension to his current contract, keeping him with the club beyond the end of the current campaign.
“I really, really enjoy it here, so it was good news when I found out I’d triggered an extra year on my contract,” he said. “It’s a good family club and I’ve settled in well. The lads are brilliant and I’ve enjoyed my time here so far, especially this season.
“I’m happy to be here for another year. To be honest, I just get on with my football, so I wasn’t really been thinking about contracts and things like that yet. At the start of this season my aim was just to play as many games as I could, because I kept breaking down last season which was frustrating.
“I just wanted to stay fit, and I didn’t even remember I had the trigger in my contract. It was really late on when I got reminded about it, and now I’ve hit it. Playing football is the main thing."
When asked if United fans were now seeing the type of impact he can have, he commented: “I think this season people are seeing the player I really am, which is a fair comment.
"Last season I was playing in all sorts of positions, and I couldn’t get a consistent run in the team because of injuries. This season, the coaching staff have been putting me in the right place where I can benefit the team. It’s been a more consistent season for me all round this year.
“I’m playing in a familiar position that I’ve played throughout my career, so I feel more comfortable. When you play in a position you know you tend to do things without thinking too much about it, and it makes it easier to play your natural game."
And on his recent career milestone, he said: “I saw that I made it to 250 career appearances a couple of weeks ago, but that’s another thing I don’t take too much notice of, to be honest.
"The main thing for me is to play football and try to perform as well as I can for the fans, my team mates and my family.
“On that, I’ve got a baby on the way as well, so it’s been a hectic few months! It’s due the beginning of March, but I’m hoping it’ll come a bit earlier than that because I literally can’t wait!”
