We all remember where we were when THAT goal hit the back of the net. Now, two decades on from Jimmy Glass’s legendary strike, the Carlisle United Supporters’ Club London Branch are delighted to launch their new t-shirt to mark what is 'probably the greatest goal of all time.'
The unique design features Glass celebrating his last minute goal which kept United in the Football League at the end of the 1998/99 season and is available to purchase now. Available in sizes small to x-x-large and priced at just £10 (plus £2 p&p when bought online) the t-shirt makes the perfect Christmas gift for United fans.
As well as celebrating what is probably the greatest goal of all time, the t-shirt also remembers blues legend Tony Hopper, who played in the game on 8 May 1999 and lost his battle with motor neurone disease in October.
The Branch will be donating £1 from each t-shirt sold to the Motor Neurone Disease Association in Hopper’s memory, having also recently dedicated issue 302 of their Hit The Bar! fanzine to the blues legend and donated the proceeds of £100 from the issue to the charity.
The Jimmy Glass anniversary t-shirt is available to order now on the London Branch website - carlislelondonbranch.org/whenjimmyscored - and will also be on sale by Branch representatives at United’s games at MK Dons and Crawley Town. The t-shirt will also be on sale in The Local on English Street in Carlisle from Thursday 6th December onwards.
Speaking about the project, London Branch Chairman, Ian Jardine, said: “The London Branch always seeks to inject some fun, some light relief into the serious business of supporting Carlisle United.
"Always trying to be ahead of the game, the end of season anniversary of the Jimmy Glass goal seemed like a perfect opportunity when it was suggested last summer. We hope that the t-shirt idea will help enthuse and encourage all Carlisle United supporters.
“It has also now given us all a chance to continue to remember Tony Hopper and to carry on the fantastic efforts he performed on behalf of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Working together our small contributions will make a big difference.”
Jimmy Glass’s 95th minute strike sparked euphoric scenes at Brunton Park, across Carlisle and from United fans across the globe when it hit the back of the net and saved the blues from relegation from the Football League. To mark the 20th anniversary of the goal the London Branch want to recapture the emotion and shared memories of blues fans from the afternoon of 8 May 1999.
Supporters are invited to contribute their stories of where they were and what they were doing at the moment Jimmy scored. Submissions will be added to an online map which as the campaign progresses will demonstrate the global impact of “probably the greatest goal of all time."
Fans can have their stories added to the map by completing the short form on the London Branch’s website at carlislelondonbranch.org/whenjimmyscored where the map can also be explored. Supporters can also share memories as well as pictures of themselves wearing their t-shirts on Twitter using #WhenJimmyScored.
The t-shirt follows a similar initiative by the London Branch four years ago as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations which saw over 400 t-shirts sold bearing a Bill Shankly design celebrating Carlisle United’s promotion to Division One at the end of the 73/74 season. A limited number of the #shanklyshirt are still available for fans to purchase.
The new Jimmy Glass anniversary t-shirt makes the ideal Christmas present for United fans but supporters are encouraged to score theirs early to avoid disappointment. The last order date for despatch ahead of Christmas is Tuesday 18 December.
