United’s chief executive Nigel Clibbens came fresh from the first series of manager interviews to give us an update on what has been another busy week at Brunton Park.
“As we stand, we have now received over 50 applications for the vacant post, with new applicants getting in touch through the course of this week,” he said. “These applications have been considered alongside those already on the initial short-list.
“During the course of this week we have held a number of interviews. Following those meetings, we now intend to narrow our list down and have a second round of interviews, early next week, and meet the leading candidates again before making our final choice.
“We will give a further update on this next week, as things develop.”
And on the players offered deals by the club, he told us: “As we said last week, we made contract offers to four senior players [Nicky Adams, Mark Ellis, Danny Grainger and Luke Joyce] and two second-year professionals [Jack Egan and Jordan Holt].
“Following discussions with the players, or with their representatives, you will have seen that some have chosen to move on to new clubs.
“Players leaving is always a sad time, but it is part of football.”
“Nicky Adams decided to return to a club with which he has a very special and long affinity,” he added. “In the many conversations I have had with Nicky in recent weeks, it was clear it would take something out of the ordinary to entice him to leave.
“As he himself has said, his decision was not financial. I’m pleased Nicky spoke in his interview on the official website to tell the fans his personal reasons, in his own words, to make it clear why he chose to leave. We are all sad to see him go.” [Click HERE to read his interview].
“Earlier today, Luke Joyce left to join Port Vale,” he continued. “Again, I am pleased Luke took the opportunity to explain his reasons in his own words, so fans can understand the thought processes some players go through. [Click HERE to read his interview].
“Luke has been a fan favourite for his total commitment through every minute of every game and will be missed.
“Discussions with the other players are ongoing. We will continue to update fans as negotiations progress and players make their decisions.”
