Youth boss Darren Edmondson gave us his reaction to the 1-1 Friday afternoon home draw with Shrewsbury Town shortly after full time at Creighton Rugby Club.

“I’ve just told the lads that you don’t always get what you deserve in this game,” he said. “The good thing was that they took the application and attitude that they’d shown in the Preston game into this game right from the first whistle.

“That sets you in good stead. We hit the post twice in the first half and the keeper made two great saves, so the chances were there. I think we probably needed to get a second goal before the break just to make it a little bit more comfortable.

“I have to say that the goal we did get from Max [Cowburn] was decent. He has that in his locker and he almost got another when the keeper made a decent save.”

“To be fair to the lads, we restricted them to next to nothing in the second half,” he added. “The centre backs won their headers and we were on the front foot as a team. There were a number of good passages of play going forward and we made some good chances. Some of the football we played was excellent.

“As these things tend to go we missed our penalty and then they go up the other end and score one. Preston missed a penalty against us last week, so I suppose it evens itself out.

“With our penalty, you do tend to see that if two lads are discussing who should take it then it ends up being missed, because it detracts from who should be concentrating on getting the job done.”

“Like I say, I can’t complain too much because the confidence is coming back,” he commented. “We’ll have other games like this, where we’ve been on top, and we’ll come through as winners. I feel gutted for the lads because I do feel it was one they deserved to win.

“Two clean sheets would have been great, and Regan Ward did his bit with a magnificent save. Other than that, the penalty was the only other shot they had. That tells you everything you need to know about the game.

“We’ll take a lot of positives from this because momentum is what you need when you have as many games as we have coming up. We haven’t been able to play many over the last two months, so they lads worked hard on fitness and I think we’re seeing the reward from that.

“If we can keep this effort going into the next few games it should take us into what could be a big end to the season. That’s what we’ll all be looking for.”
