We caught up with Hallam Hope shortly after full time on Saturday to get his thoughts on his goal in the 4-0 victory over Colchester.
“It was important for me to get a goal today,” he admitted. “I’ve been trying over the last few weeks so it’s a big weight off my shoulders.
“It’s one of those where you just have to gamble. I knew Nads [Ashley Nadesan] would aim for that type of area, so I just gambled and managed to get the touch on it. I got a decent run on the defender as well, and luckily the ball came to me.
“It’s always nice to score at that end right in front of the fans, and you could tell by my celebration that I really enjoyed it. As a striker you want to be scoring goals as often as you can so I’m just happy I’ve been able to do that again. It would be nice to get on a bit of a run of scoring over the Christmas period.
“I had a similar chance at MK Dons last week that I didn’t manage to score from, but I wouldn’t say I specifically learned anything from that. I’ve obviously been in that position before, and it was just good that I managed to put it away this time."
“I think all the lads had a good game and there was a good balance to the team," he explained. "There was a lot of energy and we tried to get forward as much as we could, which meant we got the win in the end.
“Our attacking play was good and we moved the ball quickly, which caused them a lot of problems. The first three goals were good team goals, and we had a strong base behind us which meant if we did lose the ball we could retrieve it quickly and go again."
“Everyone knows our home form hasn’t been the best so it was nice to get a result and performance like that in front of our own fans," he continued. "It’s important we keep turning that home form round in the remaining games.
“There are games where we’ve played better than that but we haven’t come away with the win. We have to take every game as it comes and try and perform like that as often as possible. The more performances we put in like that, the better the results will be."
“There are still loads of games left and we all know what we want to achieve this season," he concluded. "We want to try and win as many games as we can, get ourselves on a bit of a run, and see where it takes us.
“We know when we play well and we know when we need to do better, but I thought we all dug in against Colchester. We got the goals at crucial times and we were clinical when we had chances.
“We know we can beat anyone in this league with the players we have and with the ability we have in the dressing room. We’ve got a lot of games coming in a short space of time over Christmas, so we want to go on a run and see where it takes us.
“Our away form has been better than our home form so we’ll go to Crawley full of confidence and we're all looking forward to the game.”
