The young Blues made the trip to the Wirrall to face Tranmere Rovers as they returned to league action on Friday afternoon.

And they put in an excellent performance against the table-toppers to come away with a hard-earned 0-0 draw.

Academy boss Darren Edmondson said: "The lights were bright in possession and they worked hard.

"They competed all over the pitch and both sides played some good football. They have rightly come away feeling pleased with their performance.

"Another positive from the day was that we got more pitch time for two of our under-16 lads, which is fantastic for them and us. It gives them another taste of what this level of football is like."

United - Ashton, Goldthorpe (Wilson 75), Brockbank (Kelly 70), Olsen, Taylor, Hutchinson, Cowburn, Miller (Galloway 70), Papa, Adewusi, Dixon (Kerr 85). Sub - Ward.
