Manager Keith Curle confirmed today that midfielder Jason Kennedy has taken a step back from the action following some inflammation in a small joint in his back which caused a spasm during training ahead of last weekend’s Crewe away game.

“He’s had a little bit of a reaction with that so we rested him for a few days,” he explained. “It was a small spasm so he saw a doctor on Tuesday night who was looking at putting some anti-inflammatory injections in there to help him along and to try to calm it down.

“He’s desperate to put the work in but every time he does that at the moment it flares up. We’re managing it and that’s why we needed to take him out of the firing line for a couple of days so that the injections can do whatever they need to do.

“We’ll look at him again on Friday to see if it’s settled down. If it’s all gone well it could be that we play Kelvin Etuhu for 60 minutes and Jason for half an hour. Or it could be 70 minutes and 20 minutes.

“Jason is a real asset because he knows where the goal is and if the game was played in the 18-yard box it would be excellent for him. We’d rather have a fully fit Jason Kennedy than a player who is battling against something, so we’re happy to take a lead from the medical department on when that will be.”
