Result from the Tuesday afternoon youth game
A very tight game ended all-square on Tuesday afternoon with both goals coming early in the day as the sides battled hard to cancel each other out.Having said that, United keeper Morgan Bacon earned the man-of-the-match accolades as he produced a string of impressive second half saves to keep his side on level terms.
The Latics drew first blood with just eight minutes on the clock when a penalty for a foul committed by Olsen was swept into the bottom corner.
But the young Blues were back on level terms within five minutes when Brockbank curled a lovely delivery into the opposition box. Jaic Miller timed his run to perfection and the stopper had no chance as his header bulged the back of the net.
The game tightened up but Bacon had to be on his toes midway through the half when a defence splitting pass left him with work to do. He stayed big to make an important block.
United came into it more just ahead of the break as they started to pass the ball quickly and Cowburn forced a two-handed save out of the keeper as he angled a 28-yard free kick at the bottom corner.
Chances remained at a premium until Wigan found some space with 20 minutes left to play. They caught Carlisle on the break as they cleared the danger from inside their own half and a sweeping move left Bacon as the last line of defence. He kept his cool, closed the gap, and the big forward rushed his shot and bent it wide.
A mistake from Goldthorpe as he misplaced a pass gifted the visitors with another clear sight but Bacon was the man of the moment again as he saved with an outstretched leg.
And he was in action again in time added when he somehow got across to tip a fierce drive over the bar as it appeared to be heading for the top corner.
