The under-18 side were given another excellent run-out when they played host to Blackburn Rovers at Creighton on Tuesday afternoon.

A tight first half saw both sides create chances but Rovers went closest when a shot struck the bar and then the post following an incisive move down the left flank.

The young Blues picked up the pace after the break and they were rewarded with a neat goal when Liam McCarron strolled through a challenge before slotting an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.

United could have extended their lead, and Blackburn also made their openings, but it was the visitors who rescued a share of the bragging rights right at the death when a clumsy challenge led to a penalty which was rattled confidently into the back of the net.

Youth boss Darren Edmondson said: "The lads put in a good performance and they worked hard for each other.

"There are still things they need to work on but also a lot of things they did right.

"Fitness wise they're building up towards the new season and I think we're all looking forward to it kicking off. It's a good group of players and we'll keep working them hard so that they're as ready as they can be."

More reaction to follow.
