Striker Shaun Miller kept his good run of pre-season form going on Friday night with a well-taken goal against Blackburn Rovers which came courtesy of a slick attacking move deep into time added on for the game.

We spoke to him about it shortly after full time to get his thoughts on what had been an entertaining affair.

“It’s been a solid pre-season in terms of the football,” he said. “We’ve had some decent results and we’ve finished it off with a good performance against a decent side. I’m sure they’ll do well in League One so this is a confidence booster for us to take into the weekend.

“On a personal level it was about trying to make an impact when I got on the pitch. That’s the same for anyone who comes off the bench. It’s always pleasing to get a goal whatever the circumstance.”

And Friday night was the first time the fans had seen the Miller – Bennett partnership in action, with the pair playing off each other through the closing stages of the game.

“Richie is a big lump, isn’t he!” he said. “He’ll cause some mither for teams with his movement and things like that. It’s perfect for me working off his knock-downs, and it was the same with big Sam [Cosgrove], so it’s exciting for me.

“The goal I scored came from a great little set from Sam. I knew straight away what I was going to do and I was delighted when I saw it hit the net. It killed the game for us and I think it wrapped up a great performance from everyone.

“I do see myself as a finisher and I pride myself in getting those situations right. The more of them I can convert the better it is for all of us.”

With the season kick off now just six days away the forward confirmed that this week is about making sure everyone has their focus completely on the pending game against Swindon Town.

“The fitness side of pre-season is done now so it’s all about making sure we’re ready for the game,” he commented. “Come next weekend the lads will be buzzing and hopefully we’ll pick up a good result.

“It’s a home game as well, which is good, because thinking back to last year the first fixture wasn’t exactly a local one.

“Hopefully we’ll be setting things off with three points and we can push on from there.”
