Club statement on the current Charlie Wyke situation
As speculation grows surrounding a potential bid for United forward Charlie Wyke, we spoke to Chief Executive Nigel Clibbens this morning about the ongoing situation. He said: “Charlie is a player who is under contract at this Club and who has grown and developed significantly during his time with us.
“He has performed particularly well this season, with a first ever league hat-trick complementing the 17 goals he has already scored. It is inevitable, when a player is performing like this, that he will start to get interest from other clubs.
“As a Club, we never confirm or deny confidential contractual terms or clauses. This includes ‘so called’ release or trigger clauses, as it is not in our interest to do so.
“As Keith [Curle] has stated a number of times, if a bid is received for a player, he will be right at the heart of what we decide to do.”
“In light of the recent speculation, I sat down with Charlie and Keith on Thursday afternoon to get his thoughts on where we currently stand,” he continued. “The content of that discussion will remain private, and rightly so, but suffice to say that we are doing everything we can to keep Charlie at this club.
“In terms of his future, we believe he is a player who will score goals at Championship level, at the very least. We know there is interest from other clubs and we know that they share that opinion.
“Charlie knows that we want him to stay, but equally is it difficult to retain a player who is set on leaving. We’ve all seen in the past that players can become unsettled. As I say, the player knows what we think of him and we hope to continue to see him playing in Blue, starting tomorrow.”
