Striker George Waring on a very successful debut
Stoke City loanee George Waring made it a debut to remember at Leyton Orient on Saturday as he came off the bench to play a huge part in the game’s winning goal.He was set to celebrate when his header from a Nicky Adams delivery appeared to be top corner bound, but a good save from O’s stopper Sam Sargeant left Jamie Proctor with an invitation to bag his first goal for the club.
Speaking after the game, the big forward said: “I’m pleased to have made my debut. We got the winning goal quite quickly after I came on so it was nice to get straight into the action. I actually thought it was going in for me, but I was pleased to see Jamie Proctor finish it off.
“The cross from Nicky [Adams] was a great one and when you have physical height like mine you’ve got to use it to your advantage. There was a bit of desire and hard work to get on the end of it and I’m obviously glad that I did.
“The icing on the cake was celebrating in front of our travelling support. They’d had such a long journey so it was great to be part of the celebrations with them.”
“I think you could see how much the win meant to us when the final whistle went,” he added. “What we have to do now is make sure we keep it going by getting the next win in our next game. We want to cement our position in the automatic places and we will do that by getting more victories.”
On making his first appearance for the club, he said: “I came on in the second half and it’s definitely given me confidence. When you come on in a game it’s about making an impact.
“I got a good half hour or so and that gives me something to work from. It’s great to get going and it would have been a long trip back if we hadn’t got the three points. Having a hand in the goal is excellent because we felt we deserved the win.
“We spoke before the game about the result being more important that anything else and I thought we were the better side. Obviously they threw men forward after the red card but you have to expect that.
“Jamie was unlucky to be sent off. It’s a shame for him because he played very well. The positive is that he got his goal and he’ll be keen to carry that on. I think we played well as a team and hopefully this will be the start of another good run for us.”
