We spoke to striker Shaun Miller shorty after full time on Tuesday evening as his goal helped the lads on their way to a 2-1 victory over Fleetwood.
“It was a good performance tonight and it was important to bounce back after the disappointment of the weekend,” he said. “To get through and get the win was pleasing for everybody.
“The goal deflected which took it over the goalkeeper, but it was important for us to go in front when we did. I thought we played really well in spells during the game and we showed good character to come back after they’d equalised."
“As a striker when you’re in a situation and you get a sight of goal you’re always going to have a go," he told us. "It took a deflection but when you shoot like that you’ve always got a chance.
"I'm pleased to get off the mark so early in the season. It’s always nice to get a goal early on and I actually scored in this competition at this stage last season as well. The sooner you can get off the mark the better so I’m delighted.
“I felt really good throughout pre-season, I feel fitter than ever and I scored a few goals in the friendlies. I got off the mark tonight and I just want to keep that going and take it into the next game."
“Saturday was disappointing for all of us so it was important for us to bounce back against a team from the higher division," he commented. "It gives us confidence and we’ll use that going into the Cambridge game on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll pick up our first win in the league as well.
“We had such a good start last season and it’s important that we get back on that trail of winning games. Even though it was a cup game tonight it’s important to get that winning mentality within the group, and we’ll certainly be taking that into the Cambridge game looking to get three points."
And on his new strike partnership, he said: “It was good to play with Richie [Bennett]. It’s great for me to work off a bigger striker.
"He can beat up the defenders and I’ll get the flick ons! It was the first time we’ve played together so it will be good to see what he brings.
“It was a good team performance from the people who started, and then from the people who came on, so we’ve all given the manager things to think about and some decisions to make at the weekend.
“I would obviously like to start every game but the manager needs to decide on formations and things like that. I’ve just got to take my chances when they come."
“Cambridge will be another tough game," he concluded. "None of them are easy. We’ll be going down there with the mentality to try and win the game by whatever means necessary, and that’s all we’ll be focused on.
"We want to get points on the board as early as we can and that’s what we’ll be looking to do on Saturday.”
