Result from the Tuesday afternoon reserve game at Burnley
United came out of the blocks firing against a young Burnley side in the Tuesday afternoon reserve game at Gawthorpe Hall and they took matters by the scruff of the neck with some excellent movement of the ball. They were ahead with just three minutes on the clock when Atkinson pulled wide to make space on the right. His cross caused all kinds of problems inside the area and Derek Asamoah was on hand to smash the loose ball into the waiting net.
Visiting tails were up and good work from Devitt took him through a challenge in a dangerous area. His deep delivery was eased back into the mix by Brough and Asamoah doubled his tally with another close range thunderbolt.
The lead was further extended on 13 minutes when a low near post corner was only half cleared. Joe McKee didn't need to be asked twice as he put his boot through an unstoppable shot.
Jamie Devitt turned provider again midway through the half when he angled a run at the heart of the defence. McKee called for it and he once more found the bottom corner as he bent the ball round the keeper.
Burnley dug deep to get a foothold and they started the second half in determined mood with plenty of Claret shirts in forward areas. They were rewarded when a stinging, top corner bound shot was expertly saved by Crocombe. He was disappointed when the bouncing ball was met on the follow-up with a cool finish.
The game ebbed and flowed but it was Derek Asamoah who had the final say when he wrapped his boot round the ball on the edge of the box. His volley on the spin rose high and then dipped wickedly to make its way under the bar and over the line.
