Midfielder Russell Penn signs for United
Carlisle United have today signed experienced midfielder Russell Penn on a one-year deal (with an option) which keeps him at Brunton Park until at least the summer of 2017.
Penn, 30, started his career as a youngster with experience in the Birmingham City, Kidderminster Harriers and Scunthorpe United youth systems.
He signed professional terms with the Harriers, and made over 160 appearances, which included a short loan spell with Alvechurch early in his career at the Aggborough Stadium.
His four-year stay with Kidderminster came to an end when he joined Burton Albion in 2009, but he left the Brewers just short of 100 appearances to sign for Cheltenham Town.
He was made club captain manager Mark Yates during his time at Whaddon Road but he was lured to his last club, York City, during the January 2014 transfer window when they took him on a two-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Head of Recruitment Lee Dykes said: “He’s another player we’ve watched for a while and he ticks a lot of good boxes.
“He’s a vastly experienced midfielder and very good professional who knows the level inside out. When you’re looking for competition for places he will certainly provide that.
“The managers at the clubs he has been with have trusted him with the captain’s armband and there are very solid reasons for that. He can play, he can add a bit of grit and he encourages those around him to do the right things.
“We’re looking forward to working with him as he takes on this next challenge in his career.”
This deal remains subject to the clearance of all relevant paperwork.
