Charlie Wyke on pre-season and scoring goals
We spoke to striker Charlie Wyke about pre-season training and scoring goals as the lads returned from their mini-break to start their fifth week of pre-season training."We came back earlier than the rest of the teams so to have had a few days off has been important," he told us. "It's been a nice little break, but we're ready to go again.
"It was unfortunate that I picked up an injury in our first friendly but it was good to get 45 minutes under my belt against Warrington.
"The injury came from a bit of a nasty tackle but I think it looked worse than it actually was. It's the last thing you want in pre-season because you can end up playing catch up with the rest of the lads. Fortunately for me it wasn't that bad. I got back to work as soon as I could because I wanted to make sure I was back in training as quickly as possible."
And his return to training was quickly followed by his first goal of the summer when he rattled a second half volley into the back of the net against Warrington last week.
"It was nice to get the goal," he said. "Getting the first one is always good. The grass at Warrington was a bit long but I was happy with my finish.
"As a striker you just want to score as many goals as you can, whether that's in friendlies or league games."
"I think in the next few friendly games the gaffer will have an idea of the team he wants to start with against Portsmouth," he commented. "We've all got to go out there and give it the best we can.
"None of us have had a bad pre-season, everyone has stood out in their own way and played well, so there will be a lot of competition for those starting places.
"We've got to put 100% into every game and training session. That's all we can do, and we'll just have to see what happens come the first game.
"The start of the season is getting closer and preparation is getting more serious. We're doing more tactical stuff in training and I can't wait for it to start."
