Sales and Marketing Director Phil King on the strengthening of bonds
Sales and Marketing Director Phil King spoke recently about the ‘buzz’ surrounding the Club as we head towards the new season kick off in just under three weeks’ time.
“There is a good feeling, definitely,” he agreed. “I think there’s a really positive atmosphere around the Club at the moment. Some of the signings we’ve brought in from a football perspective have shown that we’re looking to be up there on the field and, when you flip that to the commercial side of the business, the positivity has been reflected.
“The fixtures came out in June and we’ve been signing up match sponsorships and other sponsors ever since. We were delighted to be able to announce a local company [DSD Construction Ltd] as our new front of shirt sponsor and it was fantastic news for us again yesterday when we announced the back of shirt sponsor [World Group] as well.
“We have other things in the pipeline, which we’ll be letting people know about soon, and much of that includes new businesses coming into the fold which is really positive for the Club as a whole.”
“New partners coming on board was one of the things I wanted to achieve when I came into the job a year ago,” he explained. “There are excellent existing relationships we have to build on, which have lasted a number of years already, but it’s key that we add new businesses into the mix as well.
“We’re doing that and it’s encouraging that we’re continuing to build partnerships with the business community and the wider community on an almost weekly basis.”
As to whether his first 12 months with the club had been anything close to what he had expected, he said: “I don’t think anyone could have expected the floods or to have played Everton and Liverpool in the cups. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster - but it’s certainly been interesting.
“There have been high points and tough tests, and there were things I wanted to put in place which, in some cases, we’ve managed to do. In other cases we haven’t, but there have always been reasons for that.
“As much as you don’t want to keep repeating it, the floods played a big part in taking the focus away from what we needed to do with some of our day-to-day operations. The good thing is that there’s light at the end of the tunnel and we should be back to normal, or in a much improved position, in a couple of month’s time.
“I think we can then crack on and achieve what we want to achieve.”
