Midfielder stays until end of season
Wide man Joe Thompson has today signed a contract extension which keeps him at the club until the end of the current season.
Thompson, 26, initially signed a short-term deal with United following a four week trial spell in July 2015. He has scored once in his 15 appearances for the club so far.
Manager Keith Curle said: “Joe is a very likeable character who has come in and showed a real determination to settle and progress. He doesn’t cause any trouble and he has great ability on the ball.
“We’ve all enjoyed working with him and there is absolutely no doubt there is even more and better to come from him. With the situation he was in he’s had to feel his way back into it a little bit, but he’s done that quietly and professionally, and he’s stepped up very well, whenever we’ve asked him to.
“He now has an extended period of time where he can continue to progress and really start to lay down his marker.”
He started his career at Rochdale and made his debut against United in May 2006 whilst still on youth terms with the club. He went on to make over 150 appearances for Dale during a six year stay and moved to join Tranmere in 2012 where he made 20 appearances as he battled with a serious illness.
Spells with Rochdale, Bury, Wrexham and Southport followed, with a trial a St Johnstone preceding his move to Carlisle and his impressive trial stay with the Blues.
