MANAGER: They are all vitally important to us

Keith Curle on the squad and the search for new signings

Manager Keith Curle spoke more about the Tuesday evening draw with Cheltenham as he looked back on a set of match stats which fell heavily in favour of the home side in every department.

“We’re disappointed but we know we created good chances,” he said. “I’ve got good strikers at this club who will score goals and I know we did enough to have won two games.

“Credit to Cheltenham because they worked hard, but they know they’ve played against a good team. We had to wait for our goal but the likelihood is we will now go to Cambridge, see a battling performance, have one shot on target and score from it. That’s just how football is sometimes.”

“One thing we don’t say at this club is that we’ve been unlucky,” he added. “That word was used at Dagenham last season and I went absolutely ballistic.

“We were still playing for the opportunity to get into the play-offs at that stage and we had seven or eight really good chances. We didn’t score and one of the players walked into the dressing room and said we’d been unlucky.

“I wasn’t happy about that at all. Everything I get, I work for, and I would prefer to hear a player say we need to do better than say we were unlucky.”

On the run of three games with the same starting eleven, he said: “I had a chat with all of the squad players because this is probably the first time since I’ve been here that I’ve started the same team three games in a row.

“I spoke to those who haven’t featured yet, and to those who’ve been substitutes, because they’re all vitally important to us. We’re doing this with a very small squad at the moment and they’re going to be needed to play their part. They’ve got to stay with me mentally because they will get an opportunity.”

And on the search for more new faces ahead of the closure of the transfer window, he said: “We’re ongoing with that and I’m waiting on a phone call to get a yes or a no on a couple of players. They’ve promised me an answer as soon as it’s right for them.

“I respect that players want to play at the highest level, but our results and performance levels are helping us. They’re seeing us play in the right way and I would imagine they will want to be a part of it.”
