INTERVIEW: Nice to get off the mark

Charlie Wyke on the Port Vale game

We spoke to striker Charlie Wyke following his first goal of the season in the first home victory of the season against Port Vale on Tuesday.

"It's nice to get off the mark early doors," he told us. "Hopefully that will kick start me and I can go on to score more goals. We've been working on Tom [Miller] getting in at the back post in training and thankfully I was there to tap it in.

"I think you can see how much confidence there is within the group in the way we're pressing and keeping the ball. It's a good place to be at the moment and I'm really enjoying it.

"It's good to get a goal at home so early in the season and hopefully we can make this place a fortress this year. We've got a good chance to do that in the next two games."

"I don't think they really troubled us apart from the goal," he continued. "They stepped it up for ten minutes or so but we looked very good apart from that.

"It was good to work with Shaun [Miller], he's got a bit of pace to get in behind so it's good. We work off each other and we created chances for each other. We can both score goals so it's exciting.

"It was a great first half, we pressed them high and won the ball back in good places. We looked sharp and we caught them on the counter-attack a few times, which was pleasing."

"We obviously got the point on Saturday which gave us a lot of confidence," he explained. "It was a hard fought performance from the lads. I didn't play in that one, so I was frustrated, but I was happy to get out there on Tuesday and score a goal.

"I think the manager will rotate quite a lot this season because we've got options in the squad, and everyone can play. The new players have came from clubs where they're used to starting games so there's going to be a lot of competition and hopefully I'll get to do my bit."

On his aim for the season, he said: "I want to play more games and score more goals than I did last season. Those are my main targets. If I'm out on the pitch it means I'll be doing well.

"I'll be working hard to be involved on Saturday because that will be a good game. Plymouth will have a long journey up here, and they got beat on Tuesday, so we're all feeling confident going into it."
