The Latics forged ahead and built a strong two-goal lead in the first half but Salkeld brought the young Cumbrians right back into it with a good goal just before the break.
Salkeld struck again to level things up but a free kick midway through the half put the hosts back on the front foot, and they sealed the win with a late strike in time added on.
Having said that, Carlisle still left Robin Park wondering how they hadn't claimed at least a point as they piled the pressure on through a frantic closing 15-minute spell.
