Keith Curle on Meppen-Walter and Leacock
United boss Keith Curle confirmed this weekend that Courtney Meppen-Walter is the squad member currently out on trial at another club.
“Courtney isn’t going to get the game time with us at the moment so we’ve allowed him to train with another club for four days,” he explained. “He’ll be with them until Tuesday to see if he suits the way they want to do things.
“That fits into the schedule we have, with the trip to Plymouth, and it’s a good opportunity for him to showcase himself.”
“As we said the other day, we have a player training with us with a view to a trial,” he added. “It’s Dean Leacock and he’s a player I know from Notts County.
“I like how he plays the game and I like his character. He’s had a nasty injury at the back end of last season and he’s been left to his own devices over the summer. You can become slightly deconditioned as you allow an injury to settle down, so he’s here to get up to speed both physically and mentally. We can then get him into some bounce games and we can take a look at him from there.”
And on the absence of Dave Atkinson from the squad on Saturday, he said: “He has a little bit of spasm in his hamstring so he won’t travel on Tuesday.
“He will probably get it scanned on Monday, if it hasn’t settled down, but he’s giving it as much time as possible. He’ll speak to our medical people and we’ll decide what we do with it this week.”
