Sweeney set to sign ahead of season kick off
Carlisle United Football Club have today agreed terms with former-Pools midfielder Antony Sweeney on a two-year deal which, when signed, will keep him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2016.
Sweeney, 30, signed for Hartlepool as a youngster and made over 400 appearances and scored 62 goals in the north east. Interestingly his first ever start was in a 3-1 win over United at the beginning of the 2002/03 season.
He has experienced two promotions and two relegations during his stay at Victoria Park.
“Antony fits the type of player we have been looking to recruit this summer,” manager Graham Kavanagh said. “He has experience at this level and he’s a man in terms of the way he plays his football. He’s strong and he’s capable of going box-to-box which, in turn, helps when it comes to getting or creating goals.
“I’ve had a long chat with him and I know he’ll slot in to the way we want to do things on and off the pitch, which is going to be hugely important for us this season.”
We’ll have more reaction from the manager and an interview with Antony Sweeney on the official website over the weekend.
