Rovers strike twice to win game
United took the lead in a tight game at Cammell Laird but two quickfire goals were enough to earn a win for the home side in the latest round robin fixture in the Central League Cup."We probably looked the better side when we got our goal and we thought we'd kick on from there," assistant manager Davie Irons said. "We conceded immediately from the kick off and that was massively disappointing. They got their second not long after that and the game fizzled out from there."
"We did well overall," he continued. "There were some good individual performances and the main thing was that we got pitch time for some of the lads who haven't played regularly. These games are always worthwhile for that reason alone because it's always better to play a competitive fixture.
"We finished the game with four or five young lads in the team and it's a good learning curve for them. Tranmere probably had the stronger side out but we competed well and the senior lads led by example.
"Chris Chantler played really well and he deserved his goal. He pressed in the middle of the park, he won the ball and he played it off Mark Beck as he moved forward. He left the keeper with no chance and it was a great finish."
"Conor Townsend got his first 90 minutes for a while and Courtney Meppen-Walter looked solid," he told us. "The lads worked hard and, like I say, we edged it until we gave away the equaliser. It was a decent game overall, other than the result, so we'll look to put that right in the next of our fixtures in this competition next week."
