Ladies lose out in tough game
The New Year saw the ladies take on league leaders Blackburn and, having suffered an enforced four-week break due to the weather, it was always going to be a difficult task.
The game started well, as both teams created chances, and United stood firm as their visitors attacked in numbers.
However, the resolve was broken on 20 minutes when Rovers scored from a well executed corner which was turned in at the back post by Eastwood.
United kept their heads and they were rewarded with a well taken equaliser from Chelsea Browbank on 34 minutes. The winger cut into the box and curled the ball into the top corner to leave the keeper with no chance.
United created some good openings but Rovers used the counter attack to their advantage, from a United corner, as they sped up the other end of the pitch to put themselves ahead just before the break.
Carlisle started well after the break but they were undone by a set piece when Baleman went unmarked at the far post. She waited for the ball to drop and stroked it comfortably into the bottom corner to create a two goal cushion.
United were stung and they gave themselves a lifeline with 25 minutes left to play following a fantastic passing move. Robinson eventually played Browbank through and she slotted it past the advancing keeper as she came under pressure.
The Blackburn fitness and strength became a factor as the game wore on and the cushion was reestablished when an unlucky deflection inside the area found its way into the bottom corner. And Rovers wrapped the points up with two late strikes to make the final scoreline look extremely harsh following what had been a very good performance.
