Police have cautioned a man in connection with racial harassment following tweets aimed at a Carlisle United football player.
The tweets were published on 12 February 2014 and police traced the tweets to a man from the Lincolnshire area.
The 22 year old man was interviewed and subsequently cautioned.
PC Stuart Brownrigg said: “Cumbria Constabulary wishes to reassure the general public that we will not tolerate any such comments on social media platforms and will actively investigate any such behaviour.
“Just because something is published online or on social media does not mean it is treated any less seriously than if it were said to a person’s face.”
Carlisle United media officer Andy Hall said: "We would like to thank PC Brownrigg and Cumbria Constabulary for the efficient manner in which they have dealt with this serious and sensitive matter.
"Hopefully it will serve as a warning and a reminder that people have to act responsibly when using online forums and social media."
Anyone who feels they are a victim of harassment online is asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101.
