LADIES: Bury 1 - 5 United

United climb to seventh

United continued their decent run of league form with a comfortable victory at Bury which saw United climb to seventh place in the league with one game of the season remaining, Richard Mallinson reports.

United got off to the best possible start and took the lead on five minutes when centre back Mel Mallin smashed a free kick into the roof of the net from 35 yards. United were then able to settle into the game and created a multitude of chances and dictated the play.

Bury tried to get the ball down and play however United’s experience shone through and the lead was increased on 12 minutes when Gillian McGimpsey was played through by goalkeeper Clare Edmondson and neatly finished from 15 yards.

A third was nearly scored on 20 minutes when McGimpsey had an identical chance however the Bury keeper did well to save.

United continued to press with McGimpsey, Mallinson and Jenna Ullyart having opportunities to increase the advantage. Bury began to create half chances however the United defence restricted them to long range efforts which were dealt with by Clare Edmondson.

On the stroke of half time, United got a deserved third when Mallinson was released by Sharina Robinson; after a touch she produced a neat finish from an acute angle with the ball clipping the post and going into the net.

The home side came out in the second half to try and get back into the game and they tried to stretch United’s ranks however the United midfield and defence continued to restrict them to half chances.

After 55 minutes, United made it four when Mallinson released McGimpsey who scored her second of the game. United continued to create chances however it was Bury who would score the next goal. 

United failed to clear a corner and the Bury forward headed in from 6 yards. Bury had deserved a goal for their endeavour however the game was not finished and United hit back by scoring a fifth when Mallinson broke away from the Bury defence and finished by scoring her second on 70 minutes.

Further chances were created as United dominated proceedings however they couldn’t find a sixth goal.

The victory was really pleasing for United and has saw them climb to seventh in the league. 

Next week, United entertain Woolton at Creighton in a rearranged fixture as they look to end the season with three consecutive league wins.
