Report from last weekend's game
Thanks to Richard Mallinson for this report from last weekend's Carlisle United Ladies away fixture.
Woolton Ladies 1 - 1 Carlisle United, Sunday 8 September
The Ladies travelled to Liverpool to face newly promoted Woolton and were looking to bounce back from the defeat against Stockport the previous week.
United were on top in the early exchanges and were unlucky not to take the lead in the 8th minute when some good work from Kathryn Kelly created a chance for Gillian McGimpsey who saw her effort saved by the Woolton ‘keeper.
United continued to press and some good passing and movement created several opportunities. United were rocked after 30 minutes when the home side attacked and were awarded a penalty for an alleged push in the penalty area. Keeper Jen Graham made a fantastic save from the penalty diving to her left and the rebound was cleared.
United continued to grow into the game and took the lead on 40 minutes. Jenna Ullyart and Becky Adam won the ball in the middle of the park which allowed Sharina Robinson to go on a run; she saw her first shot saved and with the ball spilling into the box, Robinson executed an exquisite volley into the top corner of the net.
United held a deserved lead at the break.
Half Time: Woolton Ladies 0-1 Carlisle United
United stayed as they were for the second half and created a couple of opportunities.
A torrential downpour nullified the game and United dug deep to try to further their lead. The home side had a couple of opportunities and they equalised after 55 minutes when the attacker lost their marker and shot into the bottom corner.
United regrouped and reorganised and were on top of the game. Kerri Mallinson was introduced on 65 minutes and won several corners which created opportunities.
On 75 minutes, Mallinson broke from the half way line latching onto a through ball from Robinson and was clean through on goal before being pulled down by a Woolton defender who was the last man.
United won a free kick around 20 yards out and the defender received a yellow card.
Mel Mallin drove the resultant free kick towards goal, the keeper fumbled it before Mallinson smashed it into the net from 5 yards ... however the effort was ruled out for offside.
United continued to press but couldn’t find the elusive second goal.
An excellent team performance from the Ladies who produced some excellent passing and movement to give them their first point of the season.
This weekend sees the Ladies entertain Accrington Stanley which will be another stern test.
