Smash and grab victory on Sunday
Penrith gained a smash and grab victory at Creighton in a game that United dominated but were unable to capitalise on a number of opportunities writes Richard Mallinson.
The sides had drawn 1-1 the previous week in the reverse fixture and United were looking to build upon their dominance.
The opening 15 minutes saw the home side on top creating opportunities and dictating the play as the visitors struggled to get the ball out of their own half.
As the game progressed, Penrith took the lead with their first opportunity when a speculative throughball found Nat Broad who smartly finished from 20 yards.
United were unlucky not to draw level when Emma Morton’s shot was saved by the Penrith keeper.
United created further opportunities but were rocked when a ball across their 6 yard box deflected off the unfortunate Mel Mallin into her own net. It was really unfortunate that in the two games against Penrith there had been two own goals scored.

United came out in the second half looking to reduce the deficit and get back into the game.
A couple of half chances didn’t materialise and United were limited to speculative efforts. Penrith’s only chance of note came on 60 minutes however they shot wide.
United changed their formation to a more attacking one and were unlucky when Chelsie Browbank’s mazy run and shot produced a smart stop from the visiting keeper.
The visitors were lucky to have 11 players on the pitch following a couple of late challenges and a couple of handballs however the ball just wasn’t going to go into the net for United.
There was some late pressure with a couple of free kicks however Penrith held on for the victory.
United will feel hard done by having only gained a point in the back to back games against Penrith as it would be fair to say that they deserved 4 out of the 6 points.
Next week sees a break from league action as United travel to NW Premier Division leaders Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup.
