Manager on looking for new players
United manager Greg Abbott confirmed today that the background work on player recruitment will continue as he waits for answers back on contracts offered to Danny Livesey, Lee Miller, Paul Thirlwell, Matt Robson and Josh Todd.
“There are no signings imminent just yet,” he admitted.
“I can’t really do too much other than background work until I know where I stand with the players who have been offered deals.
“We do have a list of players we’re looking at but we do need that definite yes or no from the other lads before we decide what we do next.”
“We have talked to players and their representatives but it’s still at the very early stages,” he continued. “I think it’s the same across football at the moment because there are very few clubs in a position, right now, to commit to new signings.
“There are also other clubs we want to talk to who have been involved, or who are still involved, in really important situations themselves. As soon as the season finishes at the top level it becomes a good time to speak to them, before they all go away on holiday.”
“I do enjoy the speculation and rumours because everybody gets really excited about it,” he said.
“The good thing for me is that I can only deal with facts. That’s why it’s difficult for me to give answers to many of the questions because the reasons behind them being asked in the first place often aren’t true.
“I think it is an exciting period for everyone. We get all of these rumours and then the real buzz when do start to make actual signings to pull our new squad together. It does require us to be patient through this early part of the summer but, once we get a few answers, we will then be able to start to ask some of the more serious questions ourselves.”
