Manager Greg Abbott on recharging the batteries
United manager Greg Abbott today admitted that he was finding it difficult to relax with so much to do before the lads get back for pre-season training at the end of June.
“I just haven’t switched off,” he said. “You really need to be able to do that if you’re going to properly recharge your batteries, but there is a lot that still needs to be done if we’re going to push this club on again.
“I feel that I have to make sure this club survives and moves on for the people of this city. I am determined that this will be a better place when I’ve gone than it was when I came, but that comes down to doing the work to make it happen.”
“I’m comfortable with that responsibility but I like to make sure the lads do get some real down time,” he added. “I actually sent them away and told them to completely forget about football for a while. They really do need to switch off.
“It’s been a gruelling nine months. The lads go through all of the emotions and they hurt when they lose. It’s been a tough season so now it’s time for them to go away and have their holiday. Obviously we want them all to come back nice and safe after it, and then we can kick off from there.”
“Pre-season never changes,” he said. “We’ll get stuck right into them when they get back and they need to be ready for that. Those good old days of coming back to get fit are long gone. They have to come back at a very high level or they’ll be left behind.”
