INTERVIEW: Great to be back

Matt Robson on the weekend win

We caught up with wide man Matt Robson to get his reaction to his return to action following a frustrating short-term injury lay-off.

“It's great to be back and especially after a result like that,” he said.

“When you're not playing it can be the worst job in the world because you just want to get out there and help the team. The injury has been frustrating because we thought I'd only be out a few days, but it turned into a couple of weeks.

“I just had to protect it and it's done me the world of good. There is still a bit of bruising left but coming back into a team performance like that makes it much easier.”

On the decision to play at the weekend, he said: “The gaffer asked me how I felt and I told him I hadn't had any reaction after I'd trained.

“Fortunately I've never had any problems with my fitness so I was able to get on with it. I did get tired towards the end, which is why I came off, but it was nothing more than that.

“It was never going to be easy against a team who are looking for automatic promotion and we expected them to bounce back after their defeat on Tuesday night. I thought we put in a really mature performance from back to front and the younger players stood up like men as well. We need that in the last nine games to make sure we pull away from where we are in the table.”

“If you look at the game as a whole we restricted them to long range shots and I don’t think Mark [Gillespie] has had to over-exert himself too much,” he added. “That just shows when you defend from the front like we did it makes it much easier for the defenders.

“I think the gaffer has wanted me and Jordan [Mustoe] to work together for a while so it was nice for us to be able to do that. There were a couple of times when there was a bit of miscommunication, but that was our first game together and I’m sure it will come.”

“A result like that was important for everyone at the club,” he admitted. “We know we can compete with anyone on our day and I thought we were terrific. I watched the Walsall game and I think it was one of the worst performances I've seen since I've been here. You could tell that none of the lads wanted a repeat and we always seem to be able to bounce back after a result or performances like that one.

“We all know we've under achieved this season so it would be nice to finish it off properly for the fans. We all wanted to be in the play offs but we've been nowhere near. We now just want to get as many points as we can so we can finish off on a bit of a high.”

“I've really enjoyed my football this year,” he concluded. “I would have liked to have contributed more goals but I'm getting myself in the positions and giving myself the chance to score.

“Tuesday night is the last game in what has been a busy period for us. Going to the league leaders will obviously be difficult, because they will be full of confidence, but after our result in this one that will be the same for us. Hopefully it will be a good game.”
