Defender on his first summer appearance
First year professional Brandon Gwinnutt got his first run-out of pre-season at Kendal on Saturday and we caught up with him at full time to get his reaction to the game.
“It felt good to be out there,” he said. “I feel fit and it’s just exciting to be playing again. That’s my first game done and I just want to kick on from here now.”
“This stage of the season is all about putting in a shift so that we can get back to playing games regularly,” he added. “Teams like Kendal always come out and test us and they take it really seriously, which we need.
“I always enjoy playing and I know I’ll get sharper as we go on through the next few weeks. It was the younger lads who came on and did the job for us in this game and we know we have to be better. That’s what this is all for though.”
“The gaffer has said that he wants to see me improving all the time,” he revealed. “I think it’s about me getting as much experience as I can so that I can start to push on. I know that as a first year professional it’s make or break this season so I’m just going to give it everything I’ve got.
“I think I am still feeling a little bit nervous about what I have to do and all I can do is put that to one side. The senior players keep telling me to keep things simple and that’s what I’m trying to do. Hopefully it’ll all keep coming together for me.”
“There is a different feeling to things for me this year,” he admitted. “I’m part of the first team squad and obviously there are more eyes on everything I do.
“Fitness is my best asset and the fact that I don’t have to worry about the running means I can concentrate on getting the football side of my game right.
“My aim is to do what the gaffer has told me to do and make sure I am improving every time I go on the pitch.”
